Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) & Metal 3D Printing

Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) is a metal 3D printing process used to build components layer by layer using metal wire as the feedstock.

An electric arc generates the heat required to melt the wire, which is deposited as successive beads according to a digital design. The process is repeated until the required geometry is achieved, enabling the production of large-scale and complex metal components.

Why is temperature measurement important to the process?

The measurement helps control the starting and interlayer/interpass temperature, influencing cooling rates,
microstructure, geometry and the final mechanical properties of the component.

What is the sensor targeting?

The sensor measures the surface temperature of deposited beads made from materials including aluminium, steel, nickel alloys and titanium.

What sensor is being utilised?

The PyroCube is used to monitor the starting or interlayer temperature before deposition. The PyroCube can be interfaced via USB or Ethernet.
